Julie Vassili: Personal Artist Statement

I am a Twenty Five year old painter, Greek American by birth but educated in England where I finished my degree in Fine Arts.

I work in oils with a fairly abstract figurative style, using photos, models and my subconscious to get the images I want. My work at the moment focuses on my feelings towards the faiths and fears we all share as humans, I’m interested in the absurdity of both extremes, and have begun experimenting with different ways of expressing this, most recently through symbolism with animals. I’m also at the same time going in a fairly different direction with my portraiture and work from life.

I feel that while there is confidence in my ideas and expression, stronger technical skills would strengthen the paintings. These skills were not encouraged in the U.K. art educational system. Painting and Drawing from life as well as understanding your chosen materials took a back seat to concepts and inventiveness. This is the main reason I started attending the Seattle Academy of Fine Art, I wanted some instruction in drawing and painting from life, and it’s been helpful to me. I want to continue with the narrative I’ve begun in my more abstract work but also become accomplished as a Portrait Artist. I feel that while the two seem very different, eventually they will combine naturally or at least influence each other.

I will continue to live and work in Seattle for the next two years before applying for an MA in New York.

I appreciate your consideration for this scholarship.
